Founded in 1790, the Balblair distillery was completely rebuilt at a new site a few miles away in 1894. After closing in 1911, it once again began producing in 1949. Since 1996, it has belonged to Inver House Distillers, which also owns Balmenach, Knockdhu, Pulteney and Speyburn. This magnificent and wonderfully mature version has taken the very substance of the sherry cask ageing, whilst staying in line with the refreshing herbaceous and creamy malted style for which this single malt from the north of Scotland is so renowned. With remarkable balance, its richness is rivalled only by its originality. Profile: the distinguished and beautifully herbaceous (cut hay) first nose is also floral (lavender) and malty (porridge). Allowed to breathe, dried apricot and juicy orange highlight the quality of the sherry cask ageing. It then becomes liquoricey and spicy (cinnamon). The nuanced attack is wonderfully juicy and rich (rhubarb tart). The mid-palate is floral (iris), spicy (saffron) and powdery (cocoa). The ethereal finish is characterized by notes of bourbon vanilla and verbena. The aftertaste is empyreumatic (polish) and mentholated. On the retro-nasal olfaction, malted barley makes a triumphant return.
