The Ben Nevis distillery was founded in 1825 and was bought by the Nikka Whisky group in 1989. Equipped with eight washbacks (six stainless steel and two Oregon pine), two wash stills and two spirit stills, it produces a single malt loved by a huge number of enthusiasts across the world. This version is as “Ben Nevis” as it gets and reaffirms its authentic, uncompromising and somewhat timeless character.
NOSE: Rich, deep. Superbly malty and waxy (beeswax, royal jelly), the first nose is also powdery (rice) and fruity (candied Mirabelle plum). Allowed to breathe, strong spices (curry, clove, nutmeg), lime aromas and fresh coriander make way for lavender honey
PALATE: Full, distinguished. The attack is then remarkably fresh. Citrus fruit (grapefruit, lemon), plant infusions (sage, verbena) and vanilla weave together delicately. The rich end of the palate (porridge) is rooty (gentian).
OVERALL: Long, full. The softly cocoa start of the finish invites us to enjoy courgette and green tomato tempura. The lemony and honeyed (acacia) after-taste comes after a praline and milky (almond, coconut) end to the finish.
